Keep Your Pup Safe in the Heat With These Summer Tips
At Puppy Play and Stay, your pup’s safety and comfort are our top priorities, especially during the sweltering summer months. As temperatures rise, it’s essential for pet parents to take extra precautions to protect their dogs from the dangers of heat. Here are some summer safety tips to keep your four-legged family member healthy and happy all season long.
-
Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Dogs can overheat quickly, especially when playing outside or in poorly ventilated spaces. Watch for symptoms of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, red gums, lethargy, vomiting, or confusion. Breeds with short snouts, like Bulldogs or Pugs, are particularly vulnerable. If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them to a shaded area, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.
-
Keep Them Hydrated
Just like people, dogs need extra water during hot weather. Always provide access to fresh, cool water – both indoors and outdoors. If you’re out and about, carry a collapsible water bowl and take frequent breaks to let your dog drink. Adding ice cubes or dog-safe broth to their water can also encourage hydration.
-
Protect Paws From Hot Pavement
Hot sidewalks and asphalt can cause painful burns on your dog’s paw pads. A simple test: place the back of your hand on the pavement – if you can’t hold it there for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your pup. Walk during early mornings or evenings when surfaces are cooler, or stick to grassy areas. Dog booties/shoes are another great option for paw protection.
-
Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to dangerous levels within minutes. It’s never safe to leave your dog unattended in a vehicle during warm weather, not even for a “quick” errand.
