Grooming Tips for the Summer Shedding Season
From the Team at Puppy Play and Stay
At Puppy Play and Stay we know dog hair is practically a season of its own, specially in the summer! As temperatures rise, many dogs start shedding their winter coats to make way for lighter, summer-ready fur. While this is completely natural, it can lead to extra cleanup at home and discomfort for your pup if not properly managed.
Here are some of our top grooming tips to help your dog stay clean, comfortable, and looking their best during the summer shedding season:
Brush Regularly (and the Right Way)
Frequent brushing (ideally 3 to 5 times per week) helps remove loose fur before it ends up on your couch or clothes. Use the right brush for your dog’s coat type:
- Slicker brushes for longer-haired breeds.
- Undercoat rakes for double-coated dogs like Huskies or Labs.
- Bristle brushes for short-haired breeds.
Bathe, But Don’t Overdo It
Bathing helps loosen dead fur and keeps your dog’s skin clean. Aim for once every 4 to 6 weeks in summer unless they’ve rolled in something extra fun. Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo to avoid drying out their skin.

Stay on Top of Flea & Tick Prevention
Shedding season means more outdoor play, and more exposure to fleas and ticks. Regular grooming helps spot pests early, but it’s also important to keep your dog on vet-approved prevention year-round.
Keep It Professional
If brushing at home is tough or your dog has a thick undercoat, a professional groomer can make all the difference. Our trained staff provides gentle de-shedding services that leave dogs cleaner, cooler, and happier.
