Finding the Right Daycare Schedule for Your Dog’s Needs

Dog daycare can be a wonderful way to keep your pup happy, socialized, and mentally stimulated while you’re at work or running errands. But one question we get a lot at Puppy Play and Stay is: How often should my dog actually attend daycare? The answer depends on your dog’s personality, energy level, age, and your own schedule.

Consider Your Dog’s Energy and Social Needs

Some dogs thrive on daily social interaction and physical activity. Breeds like Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, and Boxers often do best with frequent daycare visits, like 3-4 days. These high-energy pups love having structured playtime and are less likely to develop destructive behaviors when they’re mentally and physically stimulated.

On the other hand, if your dog is more laid-back, older, or a bit shy, 1-2 days per week might be a better fit. This still allows for socialization and enrichment without overwhelming them.

New to Daycare? Start Slow

If your dog has never attended daycare before, we recommend starting with one or two half-days to help them get comfortable. It gives our staff the chance to assess how your dog interacts with others, and it helps your pup build confidence in a new environment.

Watch for Signs Your Dog Loves (or Needs a Break From) Daycare

Most dogs will let you know how they feel about daycare. If your dog gets excited when you pull into our parking lot, naps contentedly after daycare, and has fewer behavioral issues at home, that’s a great sign you’ve found the right routine.

On the flip side, if your dog seems anxious, overly tired, or uninterested in returning, it might be time to scale back and speak with our team about what’s going on.
