How to Keep Your Dog Safe This Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day is the official kickoff to summer in Minnesota. While it’s a time for fun, food, and celebration, the festivites can also pose hidden risks for our furry friends. At Puppy Play and Stay, we care about every pup’s safety and happiness. Whether your dog is staying with us for boarding or daycare, or enjoying the weekend at home, here are essential Memorial Day safety tips to keep in mind.
BBQs and Picnic Foods: What’s Safe for Dogs?
It’s tempting to let your dog join the feast, but many common BBQ foods can be harmful, or even dangerous. Avoid giving dogs bones (especially cooked ones), fatty meats like sausages or burgers, corn on the cob, onions, garlic, and anything with spices or sauces. Alcohol and chocolate are especially toxic.
Instead, keep your dog satisfied with safe treats like frozen dog-friendly fruit (blueberries, watermelon without seeds), or bring along some of their other favorite treats to reward good behavior.
Fireworks and Noise Anxiety
Fireworks are festive for us, but terrifying for many dogs. The loud booms and flashing lights can trigger anxiety, cause dogs to run away, or lead to destructive behaviors. If your dog is staying home, make sure they’re indoors, ideally in a quiet room with familiar blankets or toys. Play calming music or white noise to help drown out the fireworks.
If your dog has a history of anxiety, talk to your vet in advance about possible calming supplements or medications. At our facility, we take special care to keep noise-sensitive pups calm and reassured during holiday weekends.
Watch Out for the Heat
Late May can bring unexpected heatwaves. Dogs can overheat quickly, especially flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs. Never leave your dog in a car, even with the windows cracked, and always ensure they have access to cool, fresh water and shade.
If your dog is playing outside, watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or even vomiting. Keep walks short and avoid the midday sun, keep in mind the pavement can also be too hot for walks as well.
A Safer Way to Celebrate
Whether you’re hosting guests, traveling, or attending a local event, make sure your dog’s safety comes first. For a stress-free weekend, consider boarding your dog with your friends at Puppy Play and Stay! We offer a cool, safe, and fun environment where they’ll be treated like family.
